EFPC WG on Migrant Health Position Paper Published
The EFPC working group on Migrant Health has published a new position paper calling for more inclusive and equitable primary care systems for migrant populations across Europe. The paper, “Person-centred, community-oriented, and diversity-sensitive primary care for migrants,” appears in the journal Primary Health Care Research & Development.
Migration has significantly diversified European societies, yet many migrants continue to face barriers when accessing primary care. These barriers include language and cultural differences, administrative obstacles, and structural inequalities within health systems.
The EFPC position paper outlines three key principles to improve primary care for migrants. First, person-centred care, which recognises the individual needs and cultural backgrounds of patients. Second, community-oriented primary care, encouraging collaboration with migrant communities and addressing social determinants of health. Third, diversity-sensitive systems, including training for healthcare professionals and policies that ensure equitable access and continuity of care.
The paper calls for coordinated action from policymakers, healthcare organisations, and professionals to strengthen migrant-inclusive primary care systems across Europe.
