EFPC statement on upcoming appointment of a new EU Commissioner for Health

Published on October 1, 2024

The European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC) is issuing an urgent call to strengthen person-centred, community-oriented, and integrated care systems across Europe.

The EFPC, a network of over 100 primary care providers, researchers, and policymakers from 33 European countries, is dedicated to improving population health through equitable, sustainable, and collaborative primary care services.

With the upcoming appointment of a new EU Commissioner for Health, the EFPC stresses that this new leader will face pressing challenges: demographic changes, preparedness for emergencies like pandemics and environmental crises, advancements in science and technology, mental health crises, health inequities, and workforce shortages in the healthcare sector.

To address these challenges, the EFPC encourages the Commissioner to focus on achieving the "Quintuple Aim," which includes:
1.      Improving care for individuals.
2.      Enhancing population health.
3.      Maximizing the value of available resources.
4.      Ensuring healthcare providers' well-being.
5.      Promoting social justice and inclusion.

The EFPC advocates for healthcare reform that fosters interdisciplinary teams working closely with the community, which is proven to be cost-effective and essential for improving population health.

The EFPC urges the European Union to carefully consider the qualifications and expertise required in appointing a new Commissioner for Health, as this individual will be crucial in leading essential healthcare reforms. The selected commissioner must have a deep understanding of health, wellbeing, healthcare organization, and social inequities, and possess the ability to collaborate across sectors within the EU.

Strong leadership is essential to guide and support governments, organizations, professionals, and citizens who are striving to improve healthcare systems.

The EFPC is committed to supporting this vision, working hand-in-hand with the EU to ensure that healthcare remains affordable, accessible, and high quality for all, ensuring no one is left behind.
